[Thread] After You've Gone [Naruto + Sasuke]
Naruto winced as he strummed another sour note on his guitar.  He shuffled the papers that held the chords and lyrics to his latest angsty heartbreaking song.  That was what sold afterall and right now he had plenty of inspiration.  It helped to get out a little here and there, but he still missed her a lot.  He didn't even feel like himself lately.

It didn't help that every time he put in a movie, it was a romantic comedy or something.  He just felt like watching things explode.  There were lots of action flicks out.  Maybe he'd go rent one, make Sasuke watch it with him.  Not that Sasuke had been around much either.  And even he wasn't feeling loser-ish enough to go to a movie theater alone.

He stopped playing long enough to hear rustling in the other room, proof that Sasuke was home at least.  Picking up his guitar and hoping for some attention, he sat on the floor next to Sasuke's shut door and started playing again.  It usually only took about three or four runs through of Blink 182's "Adam's Song" before Sasuke started complaining that his ears were bleeding.

An old tea shop? He'd been hoping for someplace that might have Ramen, or maybe some Chinese, but it was better than nothing he supposed. He followed Sasuke in, without much expectation, though he knew if Sasuke liked it, it was usually good. He had that kind of taste, much as Naruto hated to admit it.

So what now? Order tea or something and sit and talk? Naruto knew about how well that would go over. Sasuke was just about as likely to do that as he was to walk down the city streets in a mini-skirt and pumps. Which, while absurd, did create an amusing mental picture.

"So..." Naruto began, staring at the menu. "What's good?"

[OOC: I'm sorry this is so late. Work has gotten the best of me this week.]

Sasuke did nothing for a long moment. Simply stood there, staring at the menu though he already knew full well what he wanted. As did the old woman already moving from the cashier to pull the canister holding the familiar green tea leaves [the same ones, or so it had tasted, that his mother had kept ever ready back home] from the back shelf.

There was one problem with Naruto's question, however.

He didn't do sweet.

No sugar in his tea [blasphemy as far as he was concerned]. No homemade confectioneries to accompany his drink selection. Just tea. And there was something whispering from the back of his skull that Naruto would not like his particular tastes.

Seemed to be the way with just about everything between them.

So, Sasuke made a half-hearted effort to point out the sweeter items on the menu - coffee drinks that were blended, complete with whipped cream and any variety of toppings drizzled on top, and the standard hot chocolate and spiced cider - as he stepped up to receive the cup the woman had placed on the counter.

"You can read can't you?" Sasuke asked, tone tinged with annoyance as he pulled out his wallet.

Those gross herbal teas... Naruto could smell it before the lady even got it to the counter. Sasuke was always drinking that weird stuff. He'd tried it a couple times, just to see what all the fuss was about and was not at all impressed.

Bland. Just like Sasuke. He should have known.

Luckily, this place had more than just boring tea. As Sasuke pointed out the other stuff they had, Naruto's face lit up. They had those good frappuchino-ey thingies and even hot chocolate. He almost started drooling right there.

Naruto ignored Sasuke's comment and leaned forward on the counter, smiling brightly at the woman behind it. The thought of sweets was enough to cheer him, if only just a little. "Can I get a biiig cup of that double-chocolate cocoa? Oh! Oh! And can you do like with the mochachino things and put in a shot of like... peppermint or irish creme? Dude! And one of those big chocolate chip cookies if you got 'em!"

Sasuke simply rolled his eyes at Naruto's order. It was almost enough to make him regret dragging the idiot out.

Until he recalled the guitar playing. The out of place feeling of. . .mourning. For some reason, Sasuke hated to associate that particular sentiment with the blond. It was foreign, something unfit for bright days and that terribly innocent smile. Yes, it was all enough to inspire hate.

And a little bit of envy.

Scanning the small but oddly quaint [a word Sasuke had never thought himself capable of liking much less appreciating] for vacant seats, he finally spotted a table near the window. Without even whispering a word of his departure, he made for the empty seats, promptly took the one with its back to the front door.

"Tch. . ."

Naruto's false smile began to fade as he scanned the room for his moody, dark-haired room-mate and then, once spotted, followed him to an empty seat. He took the open one across the small table and propped his elbows up on it, cupping his chin in his hands.

He could see the clock on the wall ticking the seconds away in silence, only the slight buzz of chatter, hustle, and bustle floating around the room. Naruto sighed loudly. He had meant to take Sakura to a little cafe like this, but now it was just another missed opportunity. For once he didn't try to fill the silent void with mindless smalltalk. He just stared at the table before them, pining over lost chances.

Sasuke took no notice of those flowing in and out of the cafe. They meant nothing to him, even if more than enough of them had stares that lingered a little too long on his figure. It wasn't that he was used to such invasions of privacy - he just simply didn't care about those others enough to grant them even a wayward glance.

Besides, Naruto's current mood was more than enough to hold his attention. And he wasn't exactly. . .pleased about that either. Because this implied that there was some sort of bond between them. It meant that he cared on some strange level.

And that was irritating at best.

"She's gone. Get over it, moron."

Naruto frowned. It wasn't enough that he was upset about this, he had Sasuke being such an ass about it too! "Don't you miss her at all?!" he blurted. "She was my friend ok?! It might not mean a lot to you, but it did to me, so just back off!"

Naruto was quiet for a moment, surprised at his own outburst. He and Sasuke yelled back and forth all the time, but it was usually just... just banter. It was rare that he actually meant what he said.

Sasuke said nothing at first. Let those words simmer in his mind as he sipped his tea. He wasn't exactly beyond missing anyone at this point in his life. Rather, he had simply come to terms with it - by that meaning he had learned to harbor the pain and the anger [an anger crafted from the hurt of yet again being left behind] that came along with missing.

It had been the same with his brother, the same when he himself had left. And Naruto's words did nothing but stir those uneasy feelings within him, a fact that scratched annoyingly at his ego. Like a child wanting attention.

He hated that image.

"Tch. . .you should get used to it, Naruto," Sasuke muttered over his cup. Dark eyes flashed with pain, that long-buried hurt that had somehow managed to be reborn with a fine red sheen of bitter hate. A look that whispered of betrayals that were, of betrayals yet to come. "It'll happen all your life."

Naruto set his jaw firmly at Sasuke's cold and hurtful words. He'd heard them from so many people and so many times, but he'd always tried to believe that it wasn't always true. That someday... there would be people who wouldn't leave, who wouldn't just forget about him entirely.

He always tried so desperately to be loved, but rarely was it returned. To hear these same sentiments from someone he considered a friend... it hurt. Naruto was rarely good at hiding his emotions and the pain was obvious on his youthful face. It was like rubbing salt in a wound.

"You must really hate me," Naruto said quietly, begging tears not to come to his eyes. "To drag me all the way out here... make me think you care at all, think that maybe I had a friend... and all of that just to rub this in my face?" He clenched his fists at his sides, trying not to shake. "You think I don't already know that? You think I haven't already been through enough of that to... to know better?" He shook his head slowly, "But I'm not like you. I can't just close myself off and pretend like I don't care! Yeah, hell yeah it hurts, but at least I know I'm still alive and that once upon a time, I knew what it felt like to be happy."

He stood up, nearly knocking his chair to the floor as he gathered his things to leave.

"I don't hate you."

He was staring at his cup when those words came out. As though he chose not to acknowledge the fact that Naruto was on the verge of leaving, that he was the one who had ignited that reaction. After all, it was almost second nature now, pushing everyone away.

But it was harder to do so with Naruto. Sasuke had no idea what had happened between them over all these months of living together, but something had changed and he was now finding himself reluctant to just kill off the blond. Erasing every memory, every exchange between them, even though he knew it was something that needed to be done. . .

"But what does that matter? Why would it matter if I said you were the closest thing to a best friend I've ever had? In the end. . ." Sasuke stopped speaking, watched as his fingers aimlessly traced the edge of his cup. There was a bitterness to his voice that he had not been aware of, not until those last few words had fallen free.

He looked up at Naruto. And it was shamelessly apparent in the way his eyes met the blond's.

What would it matter when I betray you in the end?

But he had yet to notice the hurt that lingered, hanging onto the smile that clung to his lips.

It took Naruto a long and quiet moment to realize that Sasuke meant what he said. That if he left, Sasuke might actually miss him or... well, he knew it would be pushing it to even think that he'd be missed by his room-mate. It was probably the first time Sasuke had actually called him a friend. Not idiot, moron, pain-in-the-ass... but friend. And if there was one word that bound him to others, that held his loyalty so tightly... it was friend.

Naruto sat slowly back in his seat, watching Sasuke's eyes. Even in this situation, he still smiled, but there was a coldness to it that just didn't reach his eyes. His own blue eyes were glossy, as though tears might fall at any moment.

"Because at least I would know," he said quietly, ignoring the strange looks they were getting from other patrons. "At least I'd know that I wasn't the only one who thought so. It might not mean much to someone like you who... who is liked by people wherever he goes, but... it means a lot to me."
Uchiha Sasuke: Waitingfilming_revenge on February 12th, 2007 09:55 pm (UTC)
Sasuke looked away, hating the idea of tears coming from Naruto though he wasn't at all surprised by it. The blond was just that sort of person - overly emotional in ways that he wasn't. After all, Sasuke was well aware of the hold his own emotions held over him. But they were choking, constricting things that governed his life in ways he could almost regret.

Almost. The prospect of revenge fulfilled was more than enough to make him forgo any feelings of guilt. Too far deep into it now to ever consider backing away.

But unlike Naruto, there was nothing innocent, nothing bright that belonged to him. And Sasuke was made painfully aware of that fact as he listened to the other boy speak of things he could never, ever allow himself to believe in.

Hands brought the tea to his lips, Sasuke taking a long swallow of the liquid before setting the cup down upon the table. Even if he was going to throw it all away, maybe the moron had a point.

At least I'd know.

"Che. . .would you drink that abomination of a drink you ordered already. It's getting cold."

Naruto could feel his anger start to ebb away into exhaustion as he slipped his fingers around his mug and did as he was told. After all the emotionally draining things he'd gone through today, this was just the icing on the cake. He didn't have the words or the strength to argue and so he just... did as he was told. The sweet liquid warmed him and for a while, maybe they didn't need to say anything. He had enough thoughts running through his mind to more than fill the empty space left by the lack of conversation.

In spite of it all... he actually felt alright. Even though Sakura was gone, she was going to better things. He could still write her. Email from time to time. And he still had friends... even if they didn't want to admit it.
