[Thread] Time Passes Quietly [Ishida] [Open to all]
Uryuu sat at one of those small café tables that seemed hardly practical for more than two people to share. Barely enough room for a couple of coffee mugs, let alone plates for a proper meal. A glance to his watch proved that the hour was naught but five past twelve -- he didn't have class until the evening. It was one of those long stretches of time which seemed to be without end, and Uryuu pondered what to do with that block of hours. He contented himself for now with watching the people go by, watching the servers go about to and fro between the tables.

Even though he had said he wanted to get to know the other people whose journals and thoughts he was regularly exposed to, he found himself hesitant to actually strike up a conversation with any of them, either via a comment or other, more direct means. No matter how many people might have been cheered by his efforts on Valentine's Day (a holiday he secretly despised but tried to appear happy about), the one person who wasn't and had made himself known as such, was the sting that remained. Couldn't the guy simply have thrown away the card and not made a comment?

He sighed and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to banish the feeling. Why was it that the bad always stuck with him, and no amount of good could dispel it? Like that night with Sasuke, that smirk burned into his mind still ached even now.

So he was mocked. What difference did it make?

Still. Still. He wished it were otherwise. He wished for a better rapport with his friends, so loosely-termed. Ichigo hadn't spoken to him but a handful of times, and that last time, he wondered if it was finally the excuse the other needed to cut ties with him entirely.

No. He mustn't think like that. Instead, he returned his attention to those going past the café; the place was a stone's throw from his apartment building, and he liked to stop here for a late breakfast/early lunch sometimes on the way to class. It was a ritual and rituals were reassuring.

Naruto was on his way back to Lysgar after class. Some days the things he learned were just such a blur, especially when he had food on his mind. Which was frequently. There were still a couple of Hinata's home-made cookies waiting for him back there and he was pretty sure there was still a couple of packages of instant noodles too.

His stomach growled at him as he neared the cafe on the way home. It was probably hoping for food that he himself hadn't cooked, or burned, or in someway maimed. Naruto's wallet, on the other hand, could not agree. He wondered if they'd give him a cookie or something for his autograph on the grounds that it could be worth something someday.

Just as he turned to take a glance at what they had, a familiar face caught his eye. That one guy... Ishida, was it? Everyone at Lysgar seemed to have strange names. Not that he was one to talk really.

But either way, the guy had definitely seemed nice enough. And he'd given out cards on Valentine's Day to almost everyone, so he was probably trying really hard. And still he was sitting all by himself at his table. Naruto felt kinda bad about it. Well... he didn't have to be to work for a while... and that song for Hinata was all but written already, so it wasn't like it'd hurt him to go say 'hi.'

He walked over, a smile on his face, dropped his backpack under the table, and turned the chair around backward before sitting down. "Hey, you're that Ishida guy, right? How's it goin' man? You takin' classes here too?"

Naruto's voice interrupted his string of vague thoughts and he blinked at the other; he'd never met this man in person, but something about him seemed familiar. "Yes. I'm Ishida Uryuu." He said, and then belatedly offered a hand. "And you are...?"

The company was certainly welcome, but he wondered who would want to approach him, after all, he hadn't done a good job of making friends here. Actually, he seemed to piss more people off than anything.

When the waitress came around inquiring about orders, he asked for another coffee.

Naruto nodded, not sure if it'd be better to call the guy Ishida or Uryuu, they were both kinda... weird. "Ah, sorry!" he said belatedly, rubbing his hand on his jeans before shaking the offered hand. "Naruto! I'm in apartment #11. I gave you that winnie-the-pooh card, remember? Oh! And we totally have to hang out at the park and stuff, yeah?"

He gave Ishida a friendly grin and settled into his seat, content to let his mouth run a little. It helped him from getting too nervous when talking to new people in person for the first time. "I'm taking some music classes at the college, ah! I play guitar so like, I just thought I'd sharpen up, right? Plus it's fun, so, bonus, right?"

"Oh yes, yes, I remember." Uryuu smiled slightly and his manner warmed toward the other. "Maybe we should do that today, if you have some free time. I could use a little light-hearted amusement."

He nodded, taking another sip of his freshly-delivered coffee. "Are you in a band or anything? What kind of music do you play?" He asked, focus softly resting on Naruto, seeming interested, but not overwhelmingly so.

Naruto smiled in return. Ishida seemed like a pretty cool guy. He knew there were nice people at Lysgar, it just took a little searching. "Yeah, sure!" he replied enthusiastically. "The park isn't that far, maybe a fifteen-twenty minute walk. I've got until 5, then I gotta get ready for work."

He nodded enthusiastically. It wasn't often people asked him about his music, so when they did show interest, he would usually give them much more than they'd asked for. "Well, not right now, it's just me. But I play guitar and I sing and write music and stuff. I play... mmm... mostly punk, rock, alternative kinda stuff. At least right now that's what I do. My teacher said an artist's style can change a lot and that's ok, it's good to find your own sound, right?" Naruto used his hands a lot as he spoke, it was something of a habit. "I'm gonna make it big one of these days, seriously! Sasuke never believes me, but I know if I work hard enough, I could totally do it!"

"Sure, just let me finish my coffee. Would you like anything? My treat, of course. They do a nice cheesecake here, if you like desserts." Uryuu said, with a pleasant air.

He nodded along, listening to Naruto talk about his music. "Indeed..." Although he did look down when Sasuke's name was mentioned, his gaze darkening and a frown pulling at his lips, but he covered it well with another sip of coffee. "You sound like you have a great deal of determination. No doubt with that mindset, you will get to your destination."

"Really? Sweet!" Naruto exclaimed. It wasn't long before he'd ordered some cookies, but asked for them to-go. "So we can just take 'em along, right?" he explained.

"You think so?" Naruto was almost beaming. Why hadn't he made friends with Ishida sooner? He seemed pretty awesome. "Yeah, I'm totally gonna do it!" He glanced up at Ishida, "Hey, what about you? I bet you've got some really cool dreams and stuff too. What do you wanna be when you grow up?"
fate_calls on March 6th, 2007 01:53 am (UTC)
"Of course we can." By the time the cookies were brought, Ishida was finished with his coffee and rose from his chair. "Just let me pay the bill, I'll be right with you. Here, hold on to these." He handed Naruto the paper bag containing their dessert and went up to the counter.

Having taken care of the check, he left a generous tip under the salt shaker for the waitress, then glanced up at the other. "Shall we go?" He'd deftly avoided answering Naruto's question, as he didn't have an answer that satisfied him.

"Awesome!" Naruto was content to hold the bag while Ishida went and paid. He hadn't been out to the park for a while, people tended to look at him weird when he was there by himself, so he was glad to bring a friend.

Luckily, Naruto was easily distracted and Ishida's feint worked like a charm, "Yeah, let's do it!"

It didn't take long to reach the park, especially at Naruto's brisk pace. There were only a few kids playing on the various equipment. "You wanna do the swings first, or the slides?"
fate_calls on March 7th, 2007 12:36 am (UTC)
"Swings, I think." Uryuu tried to not think too much about what he was doing and just decided to enjoy it as it came. Hardly ever spontaneous, it was good to break routine once in awhile. A little scary, but not that he'd ever show it.

He sat down on one of the swings; when was the last time he'd done such a thing? "It's been a long time." He murmured, as if in answer to that unspoken question.
