[Thread] After You've Gone [Naruto + Sasuke]
Naruto winced as he strummed another sour note on his guitar.  He shuffled the papers that held the chords and lyrics to his latest angsty heartbreaking song.  That was what sold afterall and right now he had plenty of inspiration.  It helped to get out a little here and there, but he still missed her a lot.  He didn't even feel like himself lately.

It didn't help that every time he put in a movie, it was a romantic comedy or something.  He just felt like watching things explode.  There were lots of action flicks out.  Maybe he'd go rent one, make Sasuke watch it with him.  Not that Sasuke had been around much either.  And even he wasn't feeling loser-ish enough to go to a movie theater alone.

He stopped playing long enough to hear rustling in the other room, proof that Sasuke was home at least.  Picking up his guitar and hoping for some attention, he sat on the floor next to Sasuke's shut door and started playing again.  It usually only took about three or four runs through of Blink 182's "Adam's Song" before Sasuke started complaining that his ears were bleeding.

Naruto had just barely made it through the first few notes of that infernal song before Sasuke was up and wrenching open his bedroom door. To glare. Whole-heartedly. As if every ounce of his being was made for that single act alone.

Sometimes he thought it was.

"Play one more damn note from that song and you'll be lucky if you can feed yourself let alone play again for months to come."

Note that all of that was said through gritted teeth and in a tone that suggested his breaking point was thoroughly smashed to pieces and was scattered remorselessly before his sanity. What little was left of it after these last few days of mourning. People came. People left. There were far, far worse things a person could do.

Like shatter your confidence, grind your innocent adoration to a bleeding pulp, and then leave.

Naruto's song came to a sour end as his finger brushed a skewed chord when Sasuke practically exploded out into the hallway at him. He looked guiltily at the floor and tried not to let his lower lip stick out in a childish pout. He did, however, let out a very audible sigh.

There was silence for a moment as Naruto stared at the floor and clutched his guitar a little closer. "I... We didn't even get to say a real goodbye. I would've thrown her a party you know." He was talking to himself more than Sasuke, if only to hear himself say the words, to admit it to someone besides Naruto Uzumaki.

Sasuke didn't do this. You know, the whole cry-on-my-shoulder routine. Like what Naruto was just beginning to pull on him at this moment. Which meant there was only one thing he could do -

Stop this before it really lead to a flood of tears.

"Get your coat," Sasuke commanded irritably. He wasn't about to sit here listening to that moron croon about his loss. He felt it too, but you didn't see him curling up with the slow sounds of loss. Rather, he had thrown himself into his studies, rendered himself completely to any sense of missing from his current life. Didn't have time for it.

Didn't want to feel it all again.

And so he shut it all out, simply grabbed his jacket and glared at the seated blond. "Now. Or I'm leaving without you."

"...what?" was all Naruto could manage as he fumbled to his feet and did what he was told. He hurried along in stunned silence, dropped his guitar off on his bed, picked up his coat and met Sasuke at the door before realizing he'd forgotten to put his shoes on. He knelt on the floor, tying his laces up.

"But... um... so like, where are we going?" Naruto was too baffled to say much else. Sasuke was always shouting orders, but it was rare, like... super duper rare for him to take Naruto with him anywhere. Sasuke hated even being seen in public with his room-mate. Well... maybe... maybe he wasn't such a bad guy... right?
Uchiha Sasuke: Waitingfilming_revenge on January 23rd, 2007 07:51 am (UTC)
"Out." The obvious answer. The answer that said quite plainly You're a moron for not realizing that. Even though that, in and of itself, was a rather pointless. . .point. Sasuke decided at that moment he really needed to stop thinking on the subject of Naruto's ever yapping mouth, which hardy ever spouted off anything intelligent, and just walk out the door.

He gave a quick kick to the frame with the toe of his shoe, then shoved his hands into his pocket. Focused on his own thoughts [the where was figured out, but not much else at this point. . .like what he was going to actually do once they arrived], the young Uchiha heir began to make his way down the hall. Leaving Naruto, strangely enough, to lock up the apartment.

But this wasn't him being nice. This was him saving his own sanity by cutting out the source of this potential problem. Like debriding a wound. Prevention was the best cure, right? Sasuke muttered something to himself in an aggravated tone though there was nothing in his eyes that spoke of irritation.

Just. . .nothing. The eyes of someone trying vainly to forget everything.

"Keep up, moron."

He never once looked back.

Out. Huh. Naruto puzzled as he nearly dropped his keys on the way out the door. They jingled noisily as he locked up and trotted to catch up with Sasuke. Why did he have to walk so fast? And where were they going anyway?

Naruto frowned, shoving his cold hands into his coat pocket as he walked, concentrating only on the back of the guy in front of him. It wasn't fair. Why would she want to leave in such a hurry? If it were him, he'd want to make his last hurrah the funnest, most exciting-est, coolest bash ever. So that no one would forget, not ever. Not just... sneak off and... not tell people and... Naruto sighed to himself, kicking up slush on the pavement as he walked.
Uchiha Sasuke: Beneath it allfilming_revenge on January 24th, 2007 07:13 pm (UTC)
For Sasuke, it wasn't the manner in which she left that bothered him [if one could call it that for in reality it was more of a dull ache that he dared not acknowledge for fear of what it might blossom into]. He was too well versed in the art of goodbye to ever hold that against her. However. . .it was still goodbye.

But he wasn't about to let Naruto into that little part of his world - the place where emotions [those good emotions, the ones that had nothing to do with hellfire and blood-red revenge] still held sway over his general conscious. Instead, he merely walked along, letting his thoughts spill through the various pieces of information he had flooded his head with over the past few days. The kind of things that might one day lead to impact.

There wasn't much to be said anyways. Not on this. Because this wasn't like screaming about the pain of being betrayed by the one person you had admired above all others. a pain so deep it scarred down to the soul. This was loss. A letting go that could inspire anger if it wanted to, but not the kind that would black out everything else.

"Here," Sasuke muttered as he pulled open the door to the tea shop. Well, coffee and tea. Idly, he wondered if taking Naruto to a place where caffeine was ready available would work against him in the long run. The alternative, however, was even more dreadful. Sasuke would take his chances with a hyperactive blond.

An old tea shop? He'd been hoping for someplace that might have Ramen, or maybe some Chinese, but it was better than nothing he supposed. He followed Sasuke in, without much expectation, though he knew if Sasuke liked it, it was usually good. He had that kind of taste, much as Naruto hated to admit it.

So what now? Order tea or something and sit and talk? Naruto knew about how well that would go over. Sasuke was just about as likely to do that as he was to walk down the city streets in a mini-skirt and pumps. Which, while absurd, did create an amusing mental picture.

"So..." Naruto began, staring at the menu. "What's good?"
Uchiha Sasuke: Dead Tiredfilming_revenge on February 2nd, 2007 02:13 am (UTC)
[OOC: I'm sorry this is so late. Work has gotten the best of me this week.]

Sasuke did nothing for a long moment. Simply stood there, staring at the menu though he already knew full well what he wanted. As did the old woman already moving from the cashier to pull the canister holding the familiar green tea leaves [the same ones, or so it had tasted, that his mother had kept ever ready back home] from the back shelf.

There was one problem with Naruto's question, however.

He didn't do sweet.

No sugar in his tea [blasphemy as far as he was concerned]. No homemade confectioneries to accompany his drink selection. Just tea. And there was something whispering from the back of his skull that Naruto would not like his particular tastes.

Seemed to be the way with just about everything between them.

So, Sasuke made a half-hearted effort to point out the sweeter items on the menu - coffee drinks that were blended, complete with whipped cream and any variety of toppings drizzled on top, and the standard hot chocolate and spiced cider - as he stepped up to receive the cup the woman had placed on the counter.

"You can read can't you?" Sasuke asked, tone tinged with annoyance as he pulled out his wallet.
kyubi_rock: Shhhkyubi_rock on February 2nd, 2007 03:26 pm (UTC)
Those gross herbal teas... Naruto could smell it before the lady even got it to the counter. Sasuke was always drinking that weird stuff. He'd tried it a couple times, just to see what all the fuss was about and was not at all impressed.

Bland. Just like Sasuke. He should have known.

Luckily, this place had more than just boring tea. As Sasuke pointed out the other stuff they had, Naruto's face lit up. They had those good frappuchino-ey thingies and even hot chocolate. He almost started drooling right there.

Naruto ignored Sasuke's comment and leaned forward on the counter, smiling brightly at the woman behind it. The thought of sweets was enough to cheer him, if only just a little. "Can I get a biiig cup of that double-chocolate cocoa? Oh! Oh! And can you do like with the mochachino things and put in a shot of like... peppermint or irish creme? Dude! And one of those big chocolate chip cookies if you got 'em!"
Uchiha Sasuke: Waitingfilming_revenge on February 4th, 2007 06:05 am (UTC)
Sasuke simply rolled his eyes at Naruto's order. It was almost enough to make him regret dragging the idiot out.

Until he recalled the guitar playing. The out of place feeling of. . .mourning. For some reason, Sasuke hated to associate that particular sentiment with the blond. It was foreign, something unfit for bright days and that terribly innocent smile. Yes, it was all enough to inspire hate.

And a little bit of envy.

Scanning the small but oddly quaint [a word Sasuke had never thought himself capable of liking much less appreciating] for vacant seats, he finally spotted a table near the window. Without even whispering a word of his departure, he made for the empty seats, promptly took the one with its back to the front door.

"Tch. . ."
kyubi_rock: *sigh*kyubi_rock on February 5th, 2007 06:07 pm (UTC)
Naruto's false smile began to fade as he scanned the room for his moody, dark-haired room-mate and then, once spotted, followed him to an empty seat. He took the open one across the small table and propped his elbows up on it, cupping his chin in his hands.

He could see the clock on the wall ticking the seconds away in silence, only the slight buzz of chatter, hustle, and bustle floating around the room. Naruto sighed loudly. He had meant to take Sakura to a little cafe like this, but now it was just another missed opportunity. For once he didn't try to fill the silent void with mindless smalltalk. He just stared at the table before them, pining over lost chances.
Uchiha Sasuke: Waitingfilming_revenge on February 12th, 2007 03:51 am (UTC)
Sasuke took no notice of those flowing in and out of the cafe. They meant nothing to him, even if more than enough of them had stares that lingered a little too long on his figure. It wasn't that he was used to such invasions of privacy - he just simply didn't care about those others enough to grant them even a wayward glance.

Besides, Naruto's current mood was more than enough to hold his attention. And he wasn't exactly. . .pleased about that either. Because this implied that there was some sort of bond between them. It meant that he cared on some strange level.

And that was irritating at best.

"She's gone. Get over it, moron."
kyubi_rock: Shhhkyubi_rock on February 12th, 2007 05:51 pm (UTC)
Naruto frowned. It wasn't enough that he was upset about this, he had Sasuke being such an ass about it too! "Don't you miss her at all?!" he blurted. "She was my friend ok?! It might not mean a lot to you, but it did to me, so just back off!"

Naruto was quiet for a moment, surprised at his own outburst. He and Sasuke yelled back and forth all the time, but it was usually just... just banter. It was rare that he actually meant what he said.
Uchiha Sasuke: Beneath it allfilming_revenge on February 12th, 2007 08:24 pm (UTC)
Sasuke said nothing at first. Let those words simmer in his mind as he sipped his tea. He wasn't exactly beyond missing anyone at this point in his life. Rather, he had simply come to terms with it - by that meaning he had learned to harbor the pain and the anger [an anger crafted from the hurt of yet again being left behind] that came along with missing.

It had been the same with his brother, the same when he himself had left. And Naruto's words did nothing but stir those uneasy feelings within him, a fact that scratched annoyingly at his ego. Like a child wanting attention.

He hated that image.

"Tch. . .you should get used to it, Naruto," Sasuke muttered over his cup. Dark eyes flashed with pain, that long-buried hurt that had somehow managed to be reborn with a fine red sheen of bitter hate. A look that whispered of betrayals that were, of betrayals yet to come. "It'll happen all your life."
kyubi_rock: Shhhkyubi_rock on February 12th, 2007 08:55 pm (UTC)
Naruto set his jaw firmly at Sasuke's cold and hurtful words. He'd heard them from so many people and so many times, but he'd always tried to believe that it wasn't always true. That someday... there would be people who wouldn't leave, who wouldn't just forget about him entirely.

He always tried so desperately to be loved, but rarely was it returned. To hear these same sentiments from someone he considered a friend... it hurt. Naruto was rarely good at hiding his emotions and the pain was obvious on his youthful face. It was like rubbing salt in a wound.

"You must really hate me," Naruto said quietly, begging tears not to come to his eyes. "To drag me all the way out here... make me think you care at all, think that maybe I had a friend... and all of that just to rub this in my face?" He clenched his fists at his sides, trying not to shake. "You think I don't already know that? You think I haven't already been through enough of that to... to know better?" He shook his head slowly, "But I'm not like you. I can't just close myself off and pretend like I don't care! Yeah, hell yeah it hurts, but at least I know I'm still alive and that once upon a time, I knew what it felt like to be happy."

He stood up, nearly knocking his chair to the floor as he gathered his things to leave.
Uchiha Sasuke: Can't Sleepfilming_revenge on February 12th, 2007 09:11 pm (UTC)
"I don't hate you."

He was staring at his cup when those words came out. As though he chose not to acknowledge the fact that Naruto was on the verge of leaving, that he was the one who had ignited that reaction. After all, it was almost second nature now, pushing everyone away.

But it was harder to do so with Naruto. Sasuke had no idea what had happened between them over all these months of living together, but something had changed and he was now finding himself reluctant to just kill off the blond. Erasing every memory, every exchange between them, even though he knew it was something that needed to be done. . .

"But what does that matter? Why would it matter if I said you were the closest thing to a best friend I've ever had? In the end. . ." Sasuke stopped speaking, watched as his fingers aimlessly traced the edge of his cup. There was a bitterness to his voice that he had not been aware of, not until those last few words had fallen free.

He looked up at Naruto. And it was shamelessly apparent in the way his eyes met the blond's.

What would it matter when I betray you in the end?

But he had yet to notice the hurt that lingered, hanging onto the smile that clung to his lips.
kyubi_rock: boy and his guitarkyubi_rock on February 12th, 2007 09:32 pm (UTC)
It took Naruto a long and quiet moment to realize that Sasuke meant what he said. That if he left, Sasuke might actually miss him or... well, he knew it would be pushing it to even think that he'd be missed by his room-mate. It was probably the first time Sasuke had actually called him a friend. Not idiot, moron, pain-in-the-ass... but friend. And if there was one word that bound him to others, that held his loyalty so tightly... it was friend.

Naruto sat slowly back in his seat, watching Sasuke's eyes. Even in this situation, he still smiled, but there was a coldness to it that just didn't reach his eyes. His own blue eyes were glossy, as though tears might fall at any moment.

"Because at least I would know," he said quietly, ignoring the strange looks they were getting from other patrons. "At least I'd know that I wasn't the only one who thought so. It might not mean much to someone like you who... who is liked by people wherever he goes, but... it means a lot to me."
Uchiha Sasuke: Waitingfilming_revenge on February 12th, 2007 09:55 pm (UTC)
Sasuke looked away, hating the idea of tears coming from Naruto though he wasn't at all surprised by it. The blond was just that sort of person - overly emotional in ways that he wasn't. After all, Sasuke was well aware of the hold his own emotions held over him. But they were choking, constricting things that governed his life in ways he could almost regret.

Almost. The prospect of revenge fulfilled was more than enough to make him forgo any feelings of guilt. Too far deep into it now to ever consider backing away.

But unlike Naruto, there was nothing innocent, nothing bright that belonged to him. And Sasuke was made painfully aware of that fact as he listened to the other boy speak of things he could never, ever allow himself to believe in.

Hands brought the tea to his lips, Sasuke taking a long swallow of the liquid before setting the cup down upon the table. Even if he was going to throw it all away, maybe the moron had a point.

At least I'd know.

"Che. . .would you drink that abomination of a drink you ordered already. It's getting cold."
kyubi_rock: Shhhkyubi_rock on February 12th, 2007 11:02 pm (UTC)
Naruto could feel his anger start to ebb away into exhaustion as he slipped his fingers around his mug and did as he was told. After all the emotionally draining things he'd gone through today, this was just the icing on the cake. He didn't have the words or the strength to argue and so he just... did as he was told. The sweet liquid warmed him and for a while, maybe they didn't need to say anything. He had enough thoughts running through his mind to more than fill the empty space left by the lack of conversation.

In spite of it all... he actually felt alright. Even though Sakura was gone, she was going to better things. He could still write her. Email from time to time. And he still had friends... even if they didn't want to admit it.
